“We Must Discuss, We Must Invent”: Race, Filmmaking and Public Engagement

Abstract

Using in-depth interviews, visual texts and theories of pedagogy and public engagement, this

essay examines a film director’s experiences creating the documentary short, Beautiful Me(s): Finding our Revolutionary Selves in Black Cuba, to examine how combining the principles of Black studies and third cinema effectively incorporates civic engagement into learning about race and inequality.
